2. The British Hallmark & Stamp Check
In the UK, stainless steel isn’t legally required to be hallmarked by an Assay Office like silver or gold. However, reputable makers of quality jewellery will often stamp their pieces with "316L" or "S.Steel" to show they stand by their materials. Always check the item description when buying handmade British crafts.
3. The Skin Test (The Ultimate Hypoallergenic Check)
Quality surgical stainless steel is designed to trap nickel deep within its molecular structure so it cannot leach out.
If you wear the piece for a full day and your skin turns green or breaks out in an itchy red rash, the metal likely contains high levels of unbonded nickel or copper, meaning it is not high-quality 316L.
4. The Rust and Tarnish Test
Stainless steel gets its name because it stains less. It relies on a protective layer of chromium oxide to prevent corrosion.
